HD podcasts at the Washington Post!

Washingtonpost.com launches HD podcasts
“Washingtonpost.com has become the first news group to offer high-definition (HD) podcasts to users. The podcasts, which can be downloaded and viewed on HD TVs and computers, feature a series of documentary videos created by the Post’s multimedia team.”

Tampa Tribune Lays Off 70; At Least 15 Hyperlocal Sites Launching
“At least 15 sites are planned, with other to follow as markets expand. Three are live—Brandon News ; Suncoast News-Pasco and Suncoast News-Pinellas. The next dozen are expected to launch by June.” More from Editor & Publisher

Which would you rather have? Pulitzers or a future
“Newspaper editors, let’s rap. I realize this is a gross oversimplification, probably even a bit silly, but I’m still dying to know: What would you rather have, two or three Pulitzer finalists, or the 10,000 subscribers you seem to lose every circulation reporting period?”

What I Learned From Friendster: Jonathan Abrams’ New Startup
On too much flash: “I think the hundred million people out there who actually use the web aren’t impressed by those things, and they actually want something that loads quickly and is navigable and that works. So, our focus right now is more on substance over style.”

Finetune, the Anti-iTunes
The service was quietly launched last fall and attracts about 700,000 listeners, with slightly more than 15 percent of those being very active registered users who have created 100,000 shareable playlists. Last night they made available a smaller desktop music player based on Adobe’s new Apollo software development environment.”

Webby Nominees
Good gravy, could there be any more nominations? Even my mom is up for three awards for her dial-up BBS.

It’s all about You, You, You
“In this age of citizen journalism, I suppose much of our talk has become “your” news Web site, “your” video, “Your” Live Breaking Action Night News Team. Surprisingly, the biggest coup for “you” was never mentioned — Time magazine’s Person of The Year for 2006.” … “I wonder if we’ll look back at this era and chuckle at our vanity.”

The songbird who’s outselling Take That with her homemade album
“Acoustic guitarist Kate Walsh has knocked Take That off the top of the iTunes download album chart – but does not even own an iPod. The 23-year-old guitarist recorded her album in a friend’s bedroom and named it Tim’s House in his honour.”

An anecdote on anecdotal leads
“I’ve dubbed these stories ‘Look, Ma! I’m writing!’ because they seem designed to show off the author’s storytelling capabilities rather than his/her reporting skills.”

Fatboys?‘Wash Post’ Finds Man Who ‘Hammered’ Saddam 4 Years Ago: Now He Regrets It
“On most days, however, he cannot afford to buy gas for his own Harley, a 1982 Fat Boy.”

AllanDetrich – PictureThis: A New Life begins…
Detrich resigns. The investigation at The Blade continues and it’s going to be interesting from what I’ve heard.

Even the comics are depressing.
“I’m tired of all the depressing crap that goes on. Why can’t they report on sunshine and happiness?”

  1. If you’re going to use items from a site with Creative Commons no alterations licenses, you need to include the entire post along with the link, not just a portion of the post.

  2. I’m no copyright attorney, but I think Will’s snippets qualify squarely under fair use practices, despite whatever limitations are imposed by the Creative Commons license.

  3. Uh, that doesn’t make sense, Jason. Fair use applies. I would think that reposting the whole post would be more of a “violation” than a snipet with a link. All Will is doing is driving traffic to that site by using a brief quote/summation.

  4. Not when it has this clause -

No Derivative Works. You may not alter, transform, or build upon this work.

Reducing the snippet is an alteration and is a punishable offense.

  5. http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html

Again, driving traffic to the site. That’s a good thing.

  6. Hey guys,
Sorry about the delayed response. I’m on ‘vacation’ in Toledo visiting family and only have access to a dial-up connection, so my Internet time has been minimized.

Jason, thanks for raising the concern but I’m not sure exactly what link or about the site you’re upset over.

I’m not claiming any of the links to be my work, and often just dropping a quote to tease viewers to check them out.

I’m not sure if you find the quote offensive? Or the few times I express my opinion in a sentence? If driving traffic to others sites is illegal, then I’m probably in big trouble. So is Delicious. And Technorati. And Digg. And hundreds of thousands of bloggers. And Google.

Also, if this bothered you so much, I suspect you’d actually put a real email address or contact me directly. So I’m really left with nothing to correct or a way discuss this with you. I hope you’re just being a troll or having a bad day or something. But if you do have serious concerns and would like to discuss them, please contact me at will@journerdism.com.

Nick and Danny, thanks for your support! You guys rock!

    Cheers,
    Will
