Talking heads that work in web videography

Normally, I don’t advocate using talking heads in web video. But there are few times where it’s necessary and really ads to a story. This is one of them.

Oregonion multimedia journalist, Rob Finch, is telling a remarkable story from Lovelle Svart’s perspective: A woman with 6-months to live staring death in the face and preparing for the end. So far, it has a very intimate video diary feel because of the tight, talking head experience.

And if the thought they put into planning this project’s online presentation is any indication of what’s going to come out of it, Pulitzers could be in order.

The embeddable player. The full screen viewing option. The stand alone blog-style format. The clean, elegant design. This is excellence and I’m hooked. (And I hate talking heads.)

Full disclosure: Rob is a homie, who’s work I’ve admired since my days as a student back at the IPPA (when he was a convention speaker). He’s always been a remarkable still photographer (now turned videographer). His levels of intimacy and compassion to story subjects always seem to allow him to document life in ways few others can. He was also a coach and a Herculean help with the NPPA Multimedia Immersion Seminar planning and execution.
