Will: Just wanted to say thanks for putting this list together. I'd heard pieces of it over the years, but it's good have in one spot.

A comment on No. 6 and sharing the basic Web production work. I on a few occasions pitched my training our two in-house reporters in Web production with the goal of having them mind the two smaller-traffic sections of my old publication. I was told no by editors. The reason? Pay rates and job descriptions and conflicts with the guild.

My motivation then was to have someone in our weekly's staff trained as my backup for Web production so I could be ill (the kind where you're quarantined at home like I was) in peace, sure, but also to get the reporters dabbling in multimedia production (slideshows and video for their stories--that did come later, yay!) so that I could be freed up to tackle more advanced projects.

Will: Great post. Love the shout-outs to deserving colleagues, but you're a little too modest about your own role in ongoing efforts to transform the newsroom. Great work. Take a bow, please.
