High def YouTube; Professional photojournalists bite the dust; WSJ redesigns; Yahoo goes for citizen journalism; More on Gannett’s big changes

Lucky Wii

The Japanese Wii Safety Manual is Crazy
“Do not remove the four leaf clover from your Wii. It is Nintendo’s secret to motion sensing.” … and many other excellent observations.

Zudeo: a high-def version of YouTube
“In return for using a BitTorrent client, Zudeo offers full HD-quality videos and gigabytes of storage space. It’s free to content producers, who need to use the Azureus Director Edition to upload their creations.”

The Demise of the Professional Photojournalist
“Remember, there was once a fairly healthy community of portrait painters. When photography came along, a lot of them had to find other work; or at least their ranks were not refilled when they retired. Professional portrait photographers, similarly, are less in demand today than a generation ago. But portraits have survived — and thrived.” … “The photojournalist’s job may be history before long. But photojournalism has never been more important, or more widespread.” (Via Mr. Weiss)

Blogging Between the Lines
“But does the inherent tension between the blogosphere’s anything-goes ethos and the standards of traditional journalism mean this relationship is doomed?” (Via Romenesko)

Idea: A building shaped like Godzilla
Excellent, I wonder if it’d hold up to a hurricane. (Via digg)

In Tough Times, a Redesigned Journal
WSJ gets leaner, the NYTimes is there.

How to ’save’ the WSJ
Humorous quick fixes… “1. Brad and Angelina. 2. Run huge front page photos of New York-area professional athletes who suck. 3. Focus on CEOs who are seen in bars with someone other than spouses. 4. Front page Sudoku.”

Online news design – awful or brilliant?
Not a lot ‘new’ here but its interesting looking at the variations in page length and layout. It also appears Scandinavians seem to understand images are critical and bulleted headline lists are only good in very small numbers. I can’t wait for the U.S. to catch up!

Mojos of Fort Myers, Florida
Yes, they’re doing the mojo or vj or sojo or backpack journalist (or whatever you want to call it) thing at Gannett. Jump to page two where they start discussing more specific changes/restructuring. (via EVERYONE)

Gannett Takes the Lead. Yes, Gannett
“Just about everybody in the newspaper business belittles Gannett as the epitome of soulless corporate newspaper ownership. But Gannett’s USA Today is by far the most influential and innovative newspaper of the past 25 years (oh yes it is), and now the company is taking a bold step into the future by attempting to transform its newsrooms into “information centers” that put the Web ahead of the printing press and are trying many other radical notions of news coverage.”

Yahoo and Reuters team-up for eyewitness citizen journalism experiment
“You Witness News is the latest attempt to turn spectators into journalists by having them submit images of newsworthy events that they witness.”

Anything good on tonight? – Yahoo Yodel Anecdotal
Evidently, I’m not the only one disappointed by Yahoo’s bloated AJAX-y redesigned TV listings. They say they’re working on it. How did things get this bad though? How didn’t they do any testing? (Via LR)
